April is Motorcycle Safety Month, a time when people learn about the importance of helmets, proper protection and other issues related to safe motorcycle riding. This is also the height of many motorcycle clubs’ organizations. States celebrate this special event with various Bike rallies and races. The National Bike Month celebration began in 1948 as a way to recognize bikers’ efforts in making the roads safer for all drivers. Although the primary goal of Motorcycle Safety Month is to bring awareness to all motorcycle drivers and riders, certain groups have also identified two additional goals: reducing the number of deaths and injuries related to motorcycle accidents and promoting participation by children in motorcycle safety programs.
Motorcycle riders have the same civil rights and responsibilities as any other vehicle driver on the roads. Countless motorcyclists are willing to help reduce traffic congestion by riding non-motorized vehicles, promoting road-safety practices in communities and joining in various bike rides. There are also a number of motorcycle safety courses that are available to teach riders the basics of motorcycle safety and riding in general. These courses teach the basic skills needed to safely ride a bike, such as how to adjust the seat for the right or left leg, how to safely handle the motorcycle and what to do if a ride is disrupted or interrupted. Riders can be provided with knowledge and practice tests at the end of the course to ensure that they fully understand the material.
In addition to the important skills learned in the course, riders are encouraged to wear a leather safety jacket, leather pants and leather gloves when riding their bikes. These items protect the rider in a number of situations. If the bike meets with an accident, a rider’s protective gear prevents injuries due to impact or burns. It also cushions the impact of the wind against the body, slowing or preventing a bike rider from being thrown off balance and injured. A padded fuel cell also protects the motorcyclist’s legs in case of an accident or other type of emergency. Leather gloves provide protection to the hands, wrists and fingers in the event of a fall.
Weather conditions pose another risk to riders. Wet and cold weather can make it difficult to handle a motorcycle. Riding in rainy weather requires additional gear to keep the motorcyclist comfortable. Rain can cause water to splash into the face of the bike causing road rash and chaffing, as well as creating slick mud on the bike. It’s a good idea to change out the gear and keep dry during these conditions.
Nighttime can be a dangerous time for riders. Lights may not be working properly, there may be little or no street lighting and other drivers may not be wearing proper reflective gear. An experienced driver can maneuver through the traffic during night very well, but it would be best to ride alone or with another rider when out in the wild. Riding with friends or family at night can be a good idea to avoid being caught in a potentially hazardous situation.
Motorcycle riding is a fun and exciting hobby for many people. The most important thing to remember when taking a ride is to ride safely. Motorcycle riding is a popular recreational activity in many countries all over the world. Taking a motorcycle tour or trail ride is a great way to enjoy riding on open roads. Riding with a guide can make the experience even better and safer.
