Third Generation Honda City (Fit Aria) Launched

So the 2008 / 2009 Honda City has finally been launched in Thailand. There is already too many mainstream blogs posting on this so there is not much else to add. At the time of posting, Honda Thailand's City microsite does not seem to be working. Not sure if its Honda Thailand's server is overwhelmed by surge in traffic from all over the region or is it my hopeless ISP.

For now, pictures can be found via AutoInCar.

Base models will get beige interior while the top range models will get black trimmings.

According to MTM, it is unlikely that the City will make its Malaysia debut within this year as the City is a locally assembled model, thus it will need sometime for local suppliers to get up to speed and also to prepare the necessary jigs and tooling required to accomodate the new model. Singapore should be getting the model soon as Singapore imports its cars in CBU form. Kah Motor Singapore will be importing them from Thailand. Introduction in India is expected to begin by November this year.

Honda fanboys have been raving that this car will be a "Vios-killer." Though I personally never liked the Vios, I am also very well aware that 90% of the general public looks at cars very differently from the way I do. Thus I highly doubt the Vios will be facing threats of such cataclysmic as the naysayers put it. I say this because judging by Thailand market's pricing, the new City will see a price increase of at least 8%. The base model current Vios already significantly undercuts the base model City by a significant margin with its base model 1.5J manual. In this segment of the market, price is an extremely crucial factor.

For all the criticisms on its design, Vios has been consistently outselling the City by comfortable margin for many years. In fact, I remember this funny conversation I have with a Toyota employee - notice that most people who criticise the Vios for its ungainly "dugong" looks are those that are neither driving a City or a Vios, but those that can't afford either. So what can we conclude? Judging by their sales figures those that can afford these cars don't consider the Vios as ugly?

No doubt the new City is looking great physically. Nevertheless, Vios has a more pleasant and "standard" dashboard design.

In addition, City is more appearing on male buyer. Vios, on the other hand is more feminine towards female buyers.

The main crucial consideration is the pricing of these 2 cars. Under this budget car range, I would say a rational buyer would consider the pricing on top of its built quality.

Thus, Vios won't lose out the majority portion of potential youngsters. It's just a matter of different cup of tea for different buyer. Keke....

To me, instead of paying twice for Japanese CKD car, I would rather go for the national car, i.e. 2008Proton Saga. Size wise, it's slighly shorter (roughly the length of short ruler) and with some quality issue and technology lacking behind, it's a worth buy for Malaysian. Unless I have plenty of money to spend,.... it's otherwise. hahaha!
