007 : Quantum Of Solace, starring Aston Martin DBS

The next James Bond installment - Quantum Solace will hit the silver screens in November this year. In the latest trailer, there are some short scenes showing the sub-zero cool Aston Martin DBS being driven by Daniel Craig in a chase scene. Watch the trailer below.

At least 5 Aston Martin DBS were used in the filming of Quantum Solace, out of which at least 2 were known to have crashed - one delibrately while another was a very serious accident that resulted in the DBS crashing through a wall before plunging into Lake Grada in Italy. Stuntman Fraser Dunn was driving along the tight roads along Lake Grada heading to the filming location in heavy rain when the mishap occured. He managed to swim to safety with minimal injuries. Can't say the same about the car though.

A second DBS was sacrificed for a 15 minute finale chase scene which ended in the DBS crashing into a marble quarry.

Beside the Astons, at least 2 more Alfa Romeo 159s were totalled in a stunt scene gone wrong, which seriously injured stunt driver Aris Comninos, who had to be airlifted from the accident scene to a nearby hospital for surgery. He has since improved and is no longer life threatening condition. BBC News has a video footage of the story.

All the crashes above happened along the notoriously dangerous roads of Lake Grada in Italy.

It is unclear if Fiat (owners of Alfa Romeo) had an official product placement deal with the producers of Quantum Solace, though Ford had a 3 movie deal with the James Bond franchise. Ford were the former owners of Aston Martin before the cash-strapped American car manufacturer sold Aston Martin to Kuwaiti investment consortium.

Die Another Day featured an Aston Martin Vanquish while the baddie drives a Jaguar XKR, also a brand formerly owned by Ford. Cameo roles also include brief showing of a Ford Thunderbird driven by Hale Berry.

Compared to the superb stunts in Die Another Day, chase scenes from Casino Royale were such a let down.

In Casino Royale, an Aston Martin DBS were also used - with a pathetic end to the car, without any heroic chase scenes! The film also made a world's first preview of the Ford Mondeo, though the car used in the set is not the actual production car but a mock-up model.

The actual unfortunate DBS written off for a completely pointless scene. WTF was that for?! Watch the movie and you get what I mean. Image from Media-dog.

Now that Aston Martin is no longer owned by Ford, Ford's product placement arrangement now falls solely on its latest supermini - the Ford Ka, to be driven by latest Bond girl, Ukrainian model Olga Kurylenko.

Uber-cool Aston Martin DBS

If god were to show himself in the form of a car, I would imagine that it the car would be an Aston Martin. Just listen to the sound this heavenly being make!
